GOLD!

Colleen won a gold medal for being first place in her figure skating competition yesterday. She was happy to win, of course (and not to fall on any of her jumps), but the feeling of glory was tempered somewhat by the fact that there was only one other competitor in her group.

Congratulations Colleen! That's fantastic. How difficult a jump can she do (just curious)?

The Geneva piano competition in Illinois also has lots of little divisions based on age and experience, some of which have only one or two people in them. The difference is that your "place" is determined by some kind of point system rather than ranking, so it's possible that you could get "third place" in a section with only two people. No danger of self-esteem inflation there, eh?

Assuming that Colleen persists in her figure skating, when will she get into a bigger group?

I hope that she and her competitor don't have to face off against each other at every event for the next four years.

I still don't know all the proper skating terms. She can do toe loops and lutzes, I think, and can't do axels. She needs to upgrade her ice skates (bigger toe pick, better support) before her teacher will even let her try axels. We ordered new skates for her yesterday, which she is buying with her own savings (mostly Xmas/Chinese New Year money from relatives).

There are other larger competitions she could go to, especially if we were willing to travel. We just haven't chosen to enter them. She is likely to compete against this same girl again, but there should be others as well so I don't think this will become a savage rivalry.
